The overall win at Cannes is a win for Indian cinema whose ambition and achievements cannot be ignored. However is the review lacking overall?
The story’s pacing and overall purpose were its most critical downfalls
Despite some fantastic sound design and some compositional beauty in the frames. I was stuck in a film that couldn’t decide whether it was a documentary, an art film or a story-based work.
I call it "ego" The director tries to tell me a lot, but in the end doesn’t really decide what’s important in it all
All in all, the actual story was 1/4 of the movie, I was bored, I struggled to really connect with the 2 characters we were introduced to, all the noise and bravado, with minutes and hours of shooting. That being said there was a message and you could see it peeling away the layers, however I believe the editing needed serious work and tough decisions to focus on what was important and what makes this film successful.
In conclusion, I believe this director has an exciting career ahead of him, and this film proves the impressive point that Indian cinema can cater to western audiences (not to mention the old western aspect ratio)
With the support of a French producer and a French production company behind this piece, it’s great to see the willingness to explore other cultures and stories from around the world and celebrate it in Cannes as its Grand Prix.
